Where am I?
Spanish 1A (7th Grade)
Why you're in this class:
Do you remember how Jesus gave us this thing called the Great
Commission? He said, "Go all over the world and preach my Gospel to
EVERYONE!" Well, I take that pretty seriously. We have to do our part
by learning to be citizens of the world, no just of the
English-speaking parts of the US. There are lots of people who need to
hear about Jesus and how awesome His grace is, and quite a few of them
speak Spanish. There are lots of ways we can bring the gospel to
people; it's not just about witnessing. Sometimes, it's in helping
someone who doesn't speak any English fill out a form at the Post
Office. other times, it's caring about someone who got hurt, and
translating for them. There are ministries in St. Louis for refugees
from all over, there are mission trips to Mexico, and there are people
in the elevator who just need to hear that someone cares enough to
learn Spanish. Even though you won't be fluent at the end of the
semester, you will understand Spanish and Central and South American
culture better, and you will be able to communicate on a basic level
with Spanish speakers.
What I expect of you:
In order to achieve our goals this semester, you'll need to come to
class prepared (somewhere to take notes, a pen or pencil to write with,
your Spanish book, any homework, your brain), be focused and ready to
learn every day, and leave the bad attitude at the door! I expect us to
have fun, but we do have things to do, so you'll have to be quiet when
I ask you to. Of course there will be little picky rules, but the
basics are: Respect God, respect me, respect others (in that order!).
How you get your grade:
Classwork/Homework 30%
Conversation & Pronunciation: 20%
Quizzes, Tests & Projects: 50%
Classwork and Homework will be graded on a 5-point scale. If you do the
assignment I ask you to do, and you do it to the best of your ability
(legible handwriting, written out, most of the answers right when you
understand), you'll get 5 points. If it's only partially done, you'll
get some points, and if it's not done, it's a zero (I do NOT take late
homework!) We'll have specific conversation and pronunciation quizzes,
often with a partner. You'll know ahead of time what these will be so
you can practice. Quizzes will usually be pop quizzes, sometimes I'll
tell you. They could be over vocabulary, grammar, conversation, or a
memory verse. I might even make you memorize a song! Tests will happen
about every 3 weeks, and will usually have both listening and written
sections. There will be at least one project this semester, where you
will work with a small group and show off your skills.
